Mexico Opts for Observer Role in Gaza Peace Board

(MENAFN) Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced Tuesday that Mexico will not join the US-led Board of Peace as a full member, citing the absence of Palestinian representation on the group overseeing the Gaza ceasefire plan.

“Given that we recognize Palestine as a state, it’s important that both states, Israel and Palestine, participate. It isn’t set up that way,” Sheinbaum said during a press conference.

Instead, Mexico will be represented by its ambassador to the United Nations in an observer capacity. “They invited us to attend as observers; if we were not going to participate, then to attend as observers. And together with the foreign minister, we decided that our ambassador to the United Nations would attend as an observer,” she added.

Her comments came ahead of the board’s inaugural meeting on Thursday in Washington, DC. Sheinbaum has consistently voiced support for Palestine, describing Israel’s ongoing military actions in Gaza as genocide and advocating for a two-state solution.

The announcement follows US efforts to restore stability in the region. Since the outbreak of the Israeli-Hamas conflict on October 7, 2023, the United States has provided at least $21.7 billion in military aid to Israel, during which more than 71,000 Palestinians have been killed. In response, President Donald Trump introduced the Board of Peace, comprised of close US allies from Europe, the Middle East, East Asia, and Latin America, with the goal of overseeing reconstruction and ceasefire efforts.
