Honduras' New Leader Set for Trump Meeting
The encounter represents the inaugural face-to-face meeting between the leaders following Trump's controversial public endorsement of Asfura during the 2025 presidential race—a decision that sparked international criticism and allegations of electoral meddling in Honduran affairs.
Honduran Foreign Minister Mireya Aguero verified the scheduled discussion during a press briefing, noting that US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and a Honduran diplomatic team will participate.
"I believe this is a historic meeting. Rarely do we see such a high-level encounter so soon after a president's inauguration. To echo the president's words, Honduras is going to be fine," Aguero stated.
Juan Carlos Garcia, Honduras' Secretary of the Presidency, outlined Asfura's agenda: addressing conditions facing Honduran citizens residing in the United States and confronting tariffs the Trump administration levied against Honduran goods.
"The most important issues are the more than two million Hondurans living abroad. Let us remember that we receive over $11 billion in remittances," Garcia emphasized.
Honduras became ensnared in Trump's sweeping trade offensive, with Washington imposing a 10% duty on all Honduran exports. The punitive measures have delivered a severe blow to the Central American nation's economy, given that 46.2% of its exports—totaling $3.99 billion—flow to American markets, according to data from the Central Bank of Honduras.
The Trump administration's influence over Honduras' political landscape became unmistakable during last year's election, when the Republican leader publicly backed Asfura while threatening to suspend US aid if the candidate failed to secure victory.
Prior to his official inauguration, Asfura had already strengthened his diplomatic position through meetings with Rubio in Washington and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Israel.
